United Kingdom Passport Application & Renewal Guide for Applicants in Canada.

This guide is intended for the following applicants of ALL ages (under 16 or over 16 years of age):

applicants who are British citizens that want to renew their United Kingdom passport or apply for their first passport;

applicants that were born to a United Kingdom parent and who qualify for British Citizenship and are, therefore, entitled to a UK passport. Information on whether you qualify for UK Citizenship is included in the kit;

applicants who are British Nationals Overseas with close connection to Hong Kong;

applicants who had their passport lost or stolen;

applicants who hold a UK passport and need to have their name or photograph changed;

The United Kingdom passports are valid for ten years only and a new passport must be obtained upon expiry.

United States visits:

British citizens do not require a visitor visa for the United States as long as they have a valid passport. However, according to the US embassy information website, “a passport which states that the holder has "Right of Abode" in the U.K. does not qualify for visa-free travel under the Visa Waiver Program."

International visits:

Passports are mandatory for traveling to other countries including cruises that visit foreign ports of entry. You will need a passport even for a short 1-day trip. Most foreign countries have a requirement that a passport must be valid for at least 6 months past the date of your trip. Make sure your UK passport is in a good state and that you have at least a few blank pages in it.

In Canada, United Kingdom passports are only issued by the British High Commission in Ottawa. Consulates in Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto may help with general assistance, however, they do not issue United Kingdom passports.

Note for British Citizens who are also permanent residents of Canada:

If you are a British citizen and a permanent resident of Canada, you will require a Canadian Permanent Resident Card if you are traveling outside Canada by plane, bus, or boat. If you are traveling to the USA by car, then you can still use your original Record of Landing (IMM 1000) along with a valid UK Passport. If you do not have a permanent resident card, please contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada at 1-800-255-4541 or, in case you need further assistance, you may contact a private company that deals with expediting documents at 1-866-760-2623.

Make a note of the passport number, date and place of issue (or take a photocopy), and keep separately in a safe place.
Check the passport expiry date.
Write the full details of your next of kin in your passport.
Leave a photocopy with a friend or relative at home.
Take a second means of photo-identification with you.
Keep your passport in the hotel safe and carry a photocopy with you.
If your passport is lost or stolen overseas, contact the nearest British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate immediately for advice.
