There are hundreds of thousands of British citizens living all across the globe. The British passport proves the citizenship of the holder and his/her right to protection from the United Kingdom and his/her right to enter or exit.
Because the passport is a very important document with regard to national security and because citizens of the United Kingdom are located all over the world, the application process can be extremely technical. The application contains many clauses and regulations, meant to weed out fraudulent applications, which often confuse and frustrate the applicant. Not completing the application correctly will delay the process and could ultimately get a denial.
The following is some general information about UK passport applications:
- A person born in the UK before 01 January 1983 will be a British citizen automatically by birth. Birth in the UK after 31 December 1982 does not automatically confer citizenship. A person born there after this date will be a British citizen provided one of their parents is a British citizen or settled in the UK at the time of the birth.
- If you were born outside of the UK to a British father, you may only apply if your father was a British citizen at the time of your birth AND your father was legally married to your mother at that time.
- If your mother was a British citizen and gave birth to you outside of the United Kingdom, you are entitled to a British Passport if you were born after January 1, 1983 AND your mother was a British Citizen at the time of your birth. If you were born before January 1, 1983 to a British mother you might not be eligible to apply. You may contact the British high commission to assess your case.
- The British High commission in Canada charges a fee of $2.80/min. The British consular office in Canberra, Australia charges a fee of $2.75/minute. The British embassy in the U.S. charges a fee of $2.49/minute. New Zealand, South Africa and Hong Kong embassies do not charge a fee for general inquiries.
- The application form for Hong Kong is different than the forms used in other countries such as Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand or the U.S. Citizens of Hong Kong must use the BNO-A form where other nations must use the C1 to apply for their British passports.
